Thalaivar Wants a Tamannaah Song in Jailer 2, and Nelson Isn’t Buying It

Five days. That’s all that’s left before Jailer 2 lands in theatres on October 15, and the film has just handed us the best backstage anecdote of the promo cycle.

At a promotional event, Rajinikanth said, “The only missing element in Jailer 2 is Tamannaah.” He added that he’d told director Nelson to keep one song for her. And yeah, you can almost hear the whole room laugh.

The Exchange Everyone’s Replaying

Nelson’s polite wall

Nelson didn’t just nod along. His reply was, “I can’t keep it just because you like it, sir.” Let me be honest, I love that. Telling a 75-year-old superstar “no” in public takes some guts, even when it’s wrapped in a joke.

Thalaivar’s counter

But Rajinikanth had the comeback ready. He shot back with “I didn’t say I like it,” then explained the real logic. He’s still in the game because he does what audiences love, not what he happens to prefer. Classic Rajini. He turned a request into a lesson in staying relevant, and he did it in about two sentences.

Here’s the thing, though. Nobody has confirmed a Tamannaah appearance in the sequel. Some outlets are already calling it a fan wish for now, and that feels fair.

Why Kaavaalaa Still Won’t Leave Your Playlist

The song that swallowed Instagram

Rewind to July 6, 2023. Kaavaalaa dropped about a month before the first Jailer hit screens, and it took over everything. Anirudh Ravichander composed it, Arunraja Kamaraj wrote the lyrics, Shilpa Rao sang it, and Jani Master choreographed it. Tamannaah’s hook step turned into a reel-making machine overnight.

Within about eleven days the lyric video had passed 31 million views and over 800K likes. That’s absurd for a film song that hadn’t even reached cinemas. Tamannaah played Kamna in the film, and she told ANI that working with Rajinikanth was a dream come true.

Bindaas steps up to the mic

So does the sequel have a glamorous dance number at all? It does. Bindaas, the fourth single, arrived on September 30 with Nora Fatehi in a gold outfit and a troupe of dancers. It runs about four minutes, mixes Tamil and Hindi lyrics, and has a brief Rajinikanth appearance. It also marks Nora’s return to Tamil cinema, nearly a decade after her special appearance in 2016’s Thozha.

And that’s where it gets interesting. The film already has its big dance moment, and Rajini still wanted Tamannaah in there too. Either he really thinks one song isn’t enough, or he’s playing with expectations. With him, it could easily be both.

Jailer 2 at a Glance

Here’s the quick rundown of what we know so far:

Vidya Balan plays a character named Kantha. Sun Pictures introduced her with a teaser that had her walking down a staircase in a blue sari with a cigarette in hand. Pretty great entrance, honestly.

One more thing about that date. It’s moved around a lot. Early plans pointed to mid-2026, and later reports mentioned August 14, so October 15 has been a bit of a journey.

The sequel’s numbers vs. the original’s

Because the first film set the bar so high, the comparison makes the stakes obvious:

Point Jailer (2023) Jailer 2
Release August 10, 2023 October 15, 2026
Budget ₹200 crore Reportedly ₹250–350 crore
Box Office ₹607–650 crore, depending on the source Not out yet
OTT Deal Reportedly ₹75 crore Reportedly ₹160 crore
Big Dance Number Kaavaalaa (Tamannaah Bhatia) Bindaas (Nora Fatehi)

Look at that OTT jump. If the report is accurate, the sequel’s streaming value has more than doubled. That’s a whole lot of faith riding on one retired jailer.
