Arrested Overnight, Out on Bail Before the Vote: Nandigram's Wildest Bypoll Twist

Nandigram doesn't do quiet elections. It never has.

But even by this town's standards, the run-up to the October 6 bypoll has been something else. A candidate gets arrested hours after a big endorsement, a High Court steps in with bail, and the state rushes to the Supreme Court. All of that in about two weeks. Let me be honest, if a film-maker pitched this plot, I'd say it was too much.

How We Got Here: A Seat Left Empty

First, the backstory. In the 2026 Assembly election, Suvendu Adhikari beat Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. He also held on to Bhabanipur, so he kept that one and stepped down from Nandigram. That's why a bypoll is happening at all.

Nandigram is no ordinary seat. The 2007 anti-land acquisition movement there helped launch Mamata Banerjee's political rise, so every election in this place carries a lot of emotional weight.

This time the contest is messier than usual. The Trinamool Congress has split into factions. Banerjee's group has been allotted the name Mamata All India Trinamool Congress with a Football Player symbol, while a rival faction led by Arup Roy goes by Democratic Trinamool Congress with an Envelope symbol. The BJP, Congress and CPI are the key parties in the fight.

The Candidate Swap That Started It All

Banerjee's faction had fielded Sanchita Pradhan Dey. Then, one day before the nomination deadline, she withdrew. Banerjee announced her faction would back Milan Pradhan, the Congress candidate, and she framed it as strengthening unity within the INDIA bloc.

And that's a surprise in itself. Trinamool and Congress are both in the INDIA bloc but have been rivals in Bengal for years. Seeing Banerjee line up behind a Congress nominee was a real plot twist.

The Arrest That Shook the Race

Hours after Banerjee announced her support, Milan Pradhan was arrested. This was Friday, September 18. He was reportedly picked up from a hotel in Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district.

The arrest was linked to six cases from the 2007 Nandigram land movement, and he faces a murder charge in one of them. A lower court sent him to judicial custody until October 7. That's a day after the polling date, which obviously matters a lot for a candidate trying to campaign.

Here's the thing, an old case, a sudden arrest, and a timing that lined up with a major political announcement is exactly the kind of sequence that makes people ask hard questions. I'm not claiming anyone did anything improper. The state and police side of the story wasn't something I came across in what I read, so I can't tell you their reasoning. But the timing is why this blew up.

The Timeline at a Glance

Date What Happened
Friday, Sept 18 Sanchita Pradhan Dey withdraws; Mamata backs Milan Pradhan; Pradhan arrested hours later
After arrest Lower court remands him to judicial custody till Oct 7
Tuesday, Sept 29 Calcutta High Court grants interim bail
Wednesday, Sept 30 Released from Haldia Correctional Home
Monday Supreme Court set to hear the state's plea against bail
Oct 6 Polling day
Oct 9 Counting of votes
Oct 20 Interim bail valid till this date
Oct 21 Surrender before Haldia Sub-divisional Court

What the High Court Said

Pradhan moved the Calcutta High Court against the remand order. On Tuesday, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh granted him interim bail, essentially so he could take part in the election.

The court's reasoning was fairly plain. It said he should be given an opportunity to contest the polls. The judge also directed the state not to take any more coercive steps against him in the case, and said he shouldn't be treated as arrested in it. The bail runs till October 20, and he has to surrender before the Haldia Sub-divisional Court on October 21. Reports mention modest personal bonds, though the exact figures varied between outlets.

And the court's question, the one that gave the story its headline, was why he was arrested so suddenly. That's a pointed thing for a High Court to ask about a candidate in the middle of an election cycle.

"Withdraw Your Candidature"? Pradhan's Claim

After his release from Haldia Correctional Home on Wednesday, Pradhan made a serious allegation. He said police officials pressured him to withdraw his nomination, with something along the lines of "state your demands, withdraw your candidature." That's his claim, and it's allegation, not established fact. I haven't seen a police response to it.

Still, it adds another layer. Whatever the legal merits of the old cases, the political reading of the arrest is now a big part of the story, and a courtroom isn't going to settle that part.

The State Heads to the Supreme Court

That's where it gets interesting. The West Bengal government didn't accept the bail quietly. It appealed to the Supreme Court seeking to revoke the interim bail, and the top court has agreed to hear the matter. If you've been following along, the hearing falls right before polling day, which makes the timing almost theatrical.

So Pradhan is out, campaigning, and still legally in the crosshairs.

Why Nandigram Matters So Much Right Now

On paper, this is one seat in one bypoll. In reality, it's a test of several things at once:

What's Being Tested Why It Matters
Mamata's backing of Congress Shows whether an unusual INDIA bloc alliance can work on the ground
The split Trinamool Two factions, two symbols, one divided voter base
Adhikari's old turf The BJP has a strong record here
The bail fight Courts are now part of the campaign

Plenty of voters here carry real memories of 2007. Land, protest, violence and loss are not abstract topics in Nandigram. That's partly why a case from that period resurfacing in an election season hits a nerve.

And yeah, I'll say this plainly: courts, not commentators, will decide what the old cases really mean. Cases from nearly two decades ago deserve proper process, and so does a man trying to run for office. Both things can be true at once.
